Why this course matters
A systematic review has many steps, and each one has rules.
This course takes you through every step in order, so you always know what comes next:
- How do I choose a question and register a protocol?
- How do I search and screen the literature?
- How do I judge risk of bias and pool the results?
- How do I rate the evidence and report the review?
This is mainly a written course. Six video lessons from a live lecture appear in Modules 1, 2 and 4. The other lessons are short written pages with checklists, templates and worked examples.

What you'll learn
A Start Here module, then eleven modules that follow one review from idea to submission.
Why does medicine need systematic reviews?
Reviews versus narrative reviews, and meta-analysis as a weighted average on a forest plot.
What will your review ask?
A focused PICO question, eligibility criteria, checking for existing reviews, and PROSPERO.
How do you search for every relevant study?
Building the search, databases and registries, documenting and de-duplicating.
How do you screen the records?
Two independent screeners in Rayyan, reasons for exclusion, and the PRISMA flow numbers.
What data do you extract?
The extraction form, the numbers a meta-analysis needs, and converting medians and confidence intervals.
How do you judge risk of bias?
RoB 2, ROBINS-I, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and robvis plots.
How do you pool the results?
Effect measures, fixed and random effects, forest plots, heterogeneity, and a three-case workshop.
Are studies missing?
Funnel plots, Egger's test, trim and fill, and when these tests should not be used.
How sure can you be of the evidence?
Rating certainty with GRADE and building a Summary of Findings table.
How do you report your review?
The PRISMA 2020 checklist, flow diagram and extensions.
How do you write and submit it?
Each section of the review, common mistakes, and a final project on your own review.
The result
You will be able to carry out and report a review
The final project carries your own review from the question to submission.
