Fundamentals of Clinical Research Methods
Learn how a clinical study goes from an idea to a publication, then learn each study design, clinical trials and bias in depth.

Why this course matters
Every good study starts with knowing how research works.
Before you can run a study or judge a paper, you need the whole picture. This course answers the questions every new researcher asks:
- How do I turn an idea into a question I can study?
- How do I search the literature properly?
- Which study design answers my question?
- How do trials keep a comparison fair, and what can still go wrong?
The first modules follow one study from idea to publication. The later modules teach each design in depth.

What you'll learn
A Start Here module, then ten teaching modules. Each one answers one question.
MODULE 1
How do you find a good research question?
Where ideas come from, the FINER criteria, PICO, and how to state hypotheses.
MODULE 2
How do you search the medical literature?
Why you search first, where to search, and how keywords, MeSH terms and Boolean operators build a strategy.
MODULE 3
How do you plan a study and get it approved?
Writing the protocol, piloting, registering the study and obtaining ethical approval.
MODULE 4
How do you run a study, from the first participant to publication?
Running the study, collecting data, analysing it, writing the report and publishing in a good journal.
MODULE 5
How are study designs classified?
The map of study designs, case reports and case series, cross-sectional studies, incidence and prevalence.
MODULE 6
How do cohort and case-control studies find risk factors?
Following people forward, starting from cases and controls, and the risk ratio and odds ratio each gives.
MODULE 7
What is a clinical trial?
What makes a trial different, how trials are classified, their strengths and limits, and the four phases.
MODULE 8
How do trials keep the comparison fair?
Randomization, allocation concealment, blinding, placebo and sham controls, and intention-to-treat analysis.
MODULE 9
Two more designs: diagnostic accuracy studies and reviews
How a new test is compared with a reference standard, and how narrative and systematic reviews differ.
MODULE 10
What can go wrong?
Random error versus bias, the main biases in each design, confounding, and a closing practice exercise.
The result
You will be able to plan a study and judge one
By the end you can follow a study from the first idea to the published paper, and read any design critically.
What you'll be able to do
- Turn an observation into a research question, judge it with FINER and write it as PICO with its hypotheses
- Build a PubMed search with keywords, MeSH terms and Boolean operators
- Classify any clinical study and name its design
- Calculate a risk ratio and an odds ratio from a 2x2 table and word each one correctly
- Explain randomization, blinding and intention-to-treat, and recognise the main biases
What's included
- 36 video lessons, about 5 hours
- 10 module quizzes
- 14 reading pages, including cheat sheets, worksheets and the Negida Handbook parts 1 and 2
